The Three Characteristics ·

01

sabbe saṇkhārā aniccā

All conditioned things are impermanent.

sabbe saṇkhārā dukkhā

All conditioned things are unsatisfactory.

sabbe dhammā anattā

All phenomena are not-self.

The Conditioned ·

saṇkhārā

Formations — that which is put together.

+
√कृ √kṛ
“to make” · बनाना

Whatever arises from causes & conditions — and so must pass away.

First Mark · Impermanence ·

aniccā

अ- a-
“not” · नहीं
+

sabbe saṇkhārā aniccā

All conditioned things are impermanent.

Second Mark · Unsatisfactoriness ·

dukkhā

The opposite of सुख sukha — “ease · सुख”. Unsatisfactory · stressful.

sabbe saṇkhārā dukkhā

All conditioned things are unsatisfactory.

The Deliberate Swap ·

The third line does not read —

sabbe saṇkhārā anattā

… but instead —

sabbe dhammā anattā

The Widest Net ·

dhamma · √धृ / √dhṛ — “to hold”

In the plural, simply “phenomena” — every factor of experience.

saṅkhata

The conditioned

asaṅkhata

The unconditioned

Nibbāna is permanent (not anicca) and the end of suffering (not dukkha) — yet it too is anattā. Not-self is the one mark with no exceptions anywhere.

Third Mark · Not-Self ·

anattā

अन- an-
“not”
+
अत्ता attā
“self, soul” — the ātman · आत्मा

The Anattalakkhaṇa Argument ·

If form were truly self, you could command it — “let my body be only thus” — and it would never bring affliction. But you cannot, and it does. The same holds for each of the five aggregates. Therefore none is self.

The Liberating Mark ·

Impermanence and unsatisfactoriness are what one observes. Not-self is the insight that loosens the grip of clinging.

A Footnote

As a predicate, anattā reads either “all phenomena are non-self” or “… are selfless.” Both renderings stand.
